Refractive index of a medium is the ratio of speed of light in air to speed of light in that medium. If there is a substance A then the refractive index of A is given by :

r.i =  \frac{v_c}{v_a}

Here :- v_c = velocity of light in air

v_a = velocity of light in medium A.

Refractive index have no unit.

Now, Speed of light in water is 225 m /s

Thus we get refractive index of water to be :

r.i =    \frac{3 \times  {10}^{8} }{225}

r.i = 1.33

Refractive index of water = 1.33

Speed of light in coconut oil = 2 × 100000000m/s

Thus refractive index of coconut oil =

r.i =  \frac{3 \times  {10}^{8} }{2 \times  {10}^{8} }

Refractive index of coconut oil = 1.44

Speed of light in flint glass is 1.81 × 100000000m/s

r.i =  \frac{3  \times  {10}^{8} }{1.81 \times  {10}^{8} }

Refractive index of flint glass = 1.65

Speed of light in diamond is 125m/s

r.i =  \frac{3 \times  {10}^{8} }{125}

Refractive index of diamond = 2.42

______________________________________

Speed of light in benzene is 3× 100000000m/s

r.i =  \frac{3 \times  {10}^{8} }{2 \times  {10}^{8} }

Refractive index of benzene = 1.5

______________________________________

Speed of light in crown glass is 1.67 × 100000000m/s

r.i =  \frac{3 \times  {10}^{8} }{1.67 \times  {10}^{8} }

Refractive index of crown glass = 1.52

Refractive index of hydrogen gas is always taken as 1.
