It is a Hindu festival which is also known as Vijayadashmi i.e. Vijay+Dashmi-victory over 10 vices. It signifies the victory of Lord Rama over Demon King Ravana, good over bad & truth over lies. Ravana had a sister named Shoorpnakha. She fell in love with the brothers Rama & Lakhshamana & wanted to marry one of them. Lakhshamana refused to marry her & Rama could not as he was already married to Sita. Shoorpnakha threatened to kill Sita so that she could marry Rama. This angered Lakhshamana who cut off Shoorpnakha's nose & ears. Ravana then kidnapped Sita to take revenge. Rama & Lakhshamana later fought a battle to rescue Sita. The Monkey God Hanuman & the monkey army also helped them. They won the battle & also won the lovely Sita. When Lord Rama, Lakhshamana & Sita came back to Ayodhya then people of Ayodhya decorated whole Ayodhya with diyas & lights. This is known as Diwali. From then to now every year we all celebrate Diwali i.e. the festival of lights. Dusshehra is celebrated 20 days before Diwali. As Lord Rama defeated the Demon King Ravana, on the day of dusshehra the effigies of Ravana are burnt on bonfires in the evening.

Dussehra which is also called Vijayadashmi is a ten-day long Hindu festival that is celebrated at the end of Navratri every year. This year Dussehra will be celebrated on Friday, October 19, 2018. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the Hindu month of Ashvin which usually corresponds to September or October in the popular Gregorian calendar. It is one of the major festivals of India and is celebrated throughout the country. Dussehra or Dusshera is celebrated to mark Lord Rama s victory over the demon Ravana that signifies the triumph of good over evil. On Dussehra, huge effigies of Ravana are burnt with fireworks which symbolize the quelling of darkness by light. Dussehra also paves the way for the next big festival of Diwali (the festival of lights) which is also a big festival in India.
