Simple sentences: Sentences which do not contain any conjunction and convey statements are called simple sentences. These sentences basically contain prepositions.

Examples:

1. There is a cat under the table.

2. The Sun rises in the east.

3. I like pasta.

Compound sentences: Two simple sentences which are connected with coordinating conjunctions like: and, but, so, etc. are called compound sentences.

Examples:

1. She likes coffee but I like tea.

2. Ram goes to school everyday and Sham often takes leave.

3. They had to spend time but couldn't do that.

Given sentences: They were tired. They went home.

These sentences are simple sentences.

To convert simple sentences into compound ones, we use coordinating conjunctions.
