“Come and hire me,” I cried, while in the morning I was walking on the stone –paved road.

Sword in hand the king came in his chariot.

He held my hand and said, “ I will hire you with my power,”

But his power counted for naught, and he went away in his chariot.

In the heat of the mid-day the houses stood with shut doors.

I wandered along the crooked lane.

An old man came out with his bag of gold.

He pondered and said, “I will hire you with my money.”

He weighed his coins one by one, but I turned away.

It was evening. The garden hedge was all a flower.

The fair maid came out and said, “I will hire you with a smile”.

Her smile paled and melted into tears, and she went back alone into the dark.

The sun glistened on the sand, and the sea waves broke waywardly.

A child sat playing with shells.

He raised his head and seemed to know me and said, “I hire you with nothing.”

From hence forward that bargain struck in child’s play made me a free man.

The answer to the question is:

  • The speaker had outright rejected power, money, and beauty, demonstrating that he was uninterested in the world's materialistic pursuits.
  • He desired to be hired by someone who could provide him with something invaluable. He moved along, hoping to strike such a deal.
  • He spends practically a day looking for work in the previous stanzas. It is almost night when he rejects the gorgeous maiden. But he does not give up and resumes his search the next day.
  • This demonstrates the importance of continuing to pursue one's desires regardless of the circumstances.
  • The sun rises brightly the next morning, and its rays are mirrored on the sand. The speaker appears to be walking near a beach, as the sunlight glistens on the sand.
  • The sea had difficult-to-control waves, indicating that it was not a quiet day. The speaker's mental state of disturbance is reflected here.
  • As he walks, he notices a child sitting on the beach. The child appears unaffected by the sea or his surroundings. He sits on the beach, playing with the shells and enjoying his own company. He is quite simple and has no possessions other than the shells.
  • The toddler looked to recognize the speaker and appeared to be anticipating his arrival.
