Heya!

According to me, I would definitely go with the first option.

As the attachment says, never forget your past, it is your best teacher, I am having the same views.

So, what's wrong with the second option?

Second option says Yesterday was history, Tomorrow is a mystery, but today is the gift of God. This quotation doesn't mean either that we should completely be involved in our present. The basic mean of quote is that we should not always be depressed or gloomy because of our past. Again, we should not always think about our future. Yeah, to some extent we should, but sometimes people think too much which is not good. So the quotation means that don't regret on past, don't get involved in future too much. Make your present in such a way, that it will give you a present in future.

Anyway, talking about the first, we can get many instances why most of the successful are so humble. "Don not forget your past, while enjoying the present", the quote says. If we are too much involved in enjoying the success, we may be overconfident and thus, the depletion starts. If a person falls, then only he can become strong. The next time when he will be in the room of success, he will not fall after remembering the past. He will remember why he was depleted. He will not repeat the same mistake again, if he really wants to succeed.

History repeats itself. Why? Because we never learn from our past. World war first happened. League of Nations was made. Man never learnt from this past. World war second happened. United Nations was created. Has man learnt from his past? Probably no. World war three may happen. Another union will be created and the cycle goes.

This is probably the best example one can get about what would happen if one does not learn from his past. We will fall again, and again and again until we are perished. Imagine a case when a runner is running. He ran with his most power at first and at the end, he wasn't even able to complete the race because the energy was lost in the first. Next time, if he forgeets his past, will he be able to win? He will forget how he lost, he will even forget why he lost. But if he will remember, then ofcourse, he will not repeat the same mistake again. He may win or atleast, he will be able to complete the race.

"Simple living and high thinking". These views have their roots in the first quotation. And what's wrong with humans? They work all opposite to the policy of nature. They remember their bad past but they don't research on the past. They can found the reason for depletion of Mughals. They can found the reason for the cause of World wars, but have they ever tried to not make the same mistakes again? No they haven't. These days, "High Living and Simple Thinking" has become the 'swag' of youths. No time to think about past. If this will continue then one can easily predict that the world war will happen.

So, I think that yes, past is the best teacher and we should never forget the lessons that it gives.
Thanks!

=> All these examples/instances I have given to let one understand the concept. But not only understanding will help, but implementing will.

I think future is more important than the past. But present is the most important thing. Everything we have to do, we have to do it in present. Everything we do is for present. Past is over and is no longer important IMO and nobody knows what future holds for us. Present is really the present of God.

This doesn't mean that we have to forget past. We have to learn from it. This doesn't also mean that we must forget anything and live life in present without even caring for future because future is going to be present one day.
Present is most important of them all but we can't count out past and future. Everything we do in past is for better future and that future is going to turn into present some day. Past is foundation of life but present is our life.

I agree with moral of Bill Gates story that past is best teacher but for what does past teach us?? Past teaches everything it teaches for present.

I, on my part, advice you to live in present leaving away everything from past except it's teachings and take necessary precautions to improve your future ( I think upcoming present is better word for future).

@laughterqueen what a great question and honestly a tough one to answer.
