- Before independence, the condition of agriculture was around 4/5th of the produce was taken from the peasants as taxes
- Focus was not on new ways and bringing the technology in agriculture
- Lots of people worked in agriculture
- Almost 60% of India comprised of agricultural land.
- A variety of crops grown, including food crops such as wheat, rice, barley and non food crops such as cotton, indigo etc...
- Indian farmers had discovered and begun farming many species such as sugarcane.
- Before 18th century , cultivation of sugarcane was largely confined to India
- A few merchants begun to trade sugar.
