Comment briefly on Indian agriculture before Independence.

  • Before independence, the condition of agriculture was around 4/5th of the produce was taken from the peasants as taxes
  • Focus was not on new ways and bringing the technology in agriculture
  • Lots of people worked in agriculture
  • Almost 60% of India comprised of agricultural land.
  • A variety of crops grown, including food crops such as wheat, rice, barley and non food crops such as cotton, indigo etc...
  • Indian farmers had discovered and begun farming many species such as sugarcane.
  • Before 18th century , cultivation of sugarcane was largely confined to India
