Comment on Arjie’s last speech at school:-

  • Arjie narrates the poems in the order he planned, entirely out of sequence. Black Tie is distressed, the pastor appears "bemused," and Shehan appears to be overwhelmed with "dismay and perplexity." When Arjie returns to his seat, the instructors are visibly worried, but Mr. Sunderalingam congratulate him on trying his luck.
  • Arjie dashes upstairs to find Shehan, whom he ushers into a vacant classroom. Arjie outlines his idea to Shehan, who recognises how much he has evolved in his 2 months at Victoria Academy. "I did it for you ," Arjie claims, because he "couldn't stand to see you suffer any longer."
  • Shehan is taken aback, but the two hug. Arjie and Shehan return to the gallery after the crowd has finished cheering; Arjie feels "a sudden melancholy" as he sees his Amma, with whom he will never be able to have the same connection. Because he "inhabit a world they didn't comprehend," he learns he is "no longer a member of [his] family in the same way."

EXPLANATION:-

  • Shyam Selvadurai, a Sri Lankan-Canadian novelist, has written a coming-of-age novel called Funny Boy. The novel received the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction and the Books in Canada First Novel Award when it was first published by McClelland and Stewart in September 1994.
  • Funny Boy is a six-part film set in Sri Lanka, where Selvadurai grew up, and tells the story of a young boy growing up in an affluent Tamil family in Colombo. He explores his sexual identity and confronts Sinhala-Tamil tensions in between ages of seven and fourteen, leading up to the 1983 riots.
  • Arjie and Shehan's relationship is  unusual in that Arjie does not try to push Shehan away when they first meet, but rather when Shehan tries to make their connection more intimate by making love to Arjie for the first time when visiting his house.
  • Arjie, motivated by the homophobia inherent in his parents and Sri Lankan society, gets into a dispute with Shehan, not understanding how to react to what has transpired between them.
  • Shehan abandons Arjie after being stunned by his rejection. Arjie eventually learns his error and respects his sexuality, saying that Shehan "had offered me his love." And I had sneered at it." It's coming to terms with their sexuality".
