according to given figure a incident ray falling on a glass slab from rarer to denser and refracted and after that it emerge from glass slab .

→ when a ray of light goes from rarer to denser , it bends towards normal (at point of incidence) and in this case air is rarer medium and glass slab is denser medium . so, incident ray bend toward normal and after that it bend away from normal because when light ray goes from denser to rarer if bend away from normal .

→ in the above figure the light emerges from a parallel sides glass slab in a direction with that in which it enters the glass slab because opposite side of rectangular glass slab is parallel to each other.

● The perpendicular distance between the original path of incident ray and the emergent ray coming out of glass slab is known as lateral displacement of the emergent ray of light

● The angle which the emergent ray makes with the normal is called the angle of emergence .


At last, from this figure the whole concept is based on refraction of light
