From the beginning of the story we know that Griffin isn't a good person. He uses his scientific discovery for means that aren't nice or helpful to anybody in any form, except for himself. He further uses his new ability to turn invisible to eventually harm people. After attacking the shopkeeper, taking his money and stealing items from the shop, we further see that he isn't nice or good. His actions cannot be justified. By harming the shopkeeper, he has proven to us exactly how dangerous he can be.

He attacked the shopkeeper from behind and robbed him of all that he could find. Griffin was eager to get away from the crowded London.
