The baker was an important person in the Goan village. He used to mix, mould and bake the loaves of bread in age-old, tested furnaces. He used to come twice a day, once in the morning to sell the bread and then while returning after emptying his basket. Rather than a baker, he was a friend to the children(including the author)

The profession of a Baker was much more popular in Goa among the Portuguese. event today baking bread is quite popular. In traditional Goan life bakers used to carry a musical bamboo that announced their arrival. They visited the streets twice a day.

The baker's were polite and courteous. They greeted the lady of the house. Children treated them as their friend, philosopher and guide. Bakers also knew the taste of all age-group for bread. They brought special bread for children and elders. The bakers use to wear a peculiar dress. It was a kind of long frock. It reached there knees.They used to wear trousers longer than half pants and shorter than full length pants.

Sweet bread known as bol was used as gift in marriage parties. A feast or a party had charm without bread. On the occasion of the engagement of a daughter, the lady of the house made sandwiches of bread .Bread in the form of cake was considered a must on the Christmas festival. All these things show how essential presence of a baker was.
