Ethanoic acid is the standardized, less common name of acetic acid. Vinegar is water and acetic acid, and forms as ethanol is slowly oxidized by air (for instance, wine vinegar is vinegar made by aging wine in an oxidizing environment). So anything that uses vinegar uses ethanoic acid. Vinegar is often used for cleaning, cooking, pickling, in salad dressing, etc. In the lab, acetic/ethanoic acid is used as a standard weak acid for creating buffers, as well as in synthesis. Since it comes from purifying vinegar, it is one of the most readily available chemicals, and it is pretty cheap.
