That is an intriguing question. Why do you want to categorize communities? My initial thoughts include:

Interests: hobbies, occupations, education, personal preferences - we like people who are like us

Action: we like people who are passionate about the same things we are passionate about

Place: we are naturally a part of our community in terms of neighborhood, city, state, country - they create a sense of pride (so long as we agree with the lifestyle of our community)

Practice

Family and friends

Beliefs: political, religious, spiritual, and for some reason I'm thinking about AA (addicts anonymous groups) and crossfit

School: current students and alumni

Class: lifestyle, healthcare, leisurely and shopping destinations

Race/Ethnicity

Nationality

Gender

Sexuality
