Actually in clinical thermometer have kink, this \textbf{kink} is actually a break for the mercury caplullay tube.

Whem ever mercury crosses kink level, kink will stop its back motion.

the mercury not fall or rise in a clinical thermometer when taken out of mouth because it won't rise untill the thermometer placed in a warmer place than it's temperature.
