Solar energy constitutes very little of the total energy production in the country. Whatever little is produced by the states is consumed by them. There is though increased demand for solar energy and several projects are in the pipeline all across the country.

Tamil Nadu has stated setting up of a 3000MW solar energy plant by 2015. That will increase the power generating capacity of the country by 30%. With this project, Tamil Nadu will become second to Gujarat in producing solar energy. Current installed capacity of the state is 17.055 MW

Gujarat is the leading state for generating solar power in India. 2/3rd of the total solar power generated in India comes from this state. Charanka village in Gujarat has the biggest solar park of Asia. Current installed capacity of the state is 824 MW

West Bengal has proposed setting up of the country's biggest solar power plant of 250MW at Baghmundi, Purulia. Rajarhat New Town has been declared solar city with compulsory roof tops solar panels for all commercial and residential buildings.Current installed capacity of the state is 2 MW

Himachal Pradesh has also declared its plans for harnessing solar energy. The state has planned several small projects ranging from 2 MW to 5MW to be installed there. Current installed capacity of the state is 2 MW

The anticipated solar power demand of these states by 2016-17 would be as follows:

Tamil Nadu : 118724 MU

Gujarat : 104102 MU

West Bengal : 57735 MU

Himachal Pradesh : 10989 MU
