Formal groups:

  • Functions of formal groups are explicitly stated, in a club or in an organisation.
  • The roles of the members are also well-defined and strong.
  • For example, military or Indian railways are formal groups have command for decision-making.

Informal groups:

  • These groups have no explicit rules and regulations.
  • In informal groups feel more comfortable for taking decisions in normal settings. For example, tea group or lunch group.

In-group:

  • People in group are considered as 'me, my, we, our'.
  • It is always good, strong, cohesive, open-hearted, relaxed etc..,
  • People in these group may have desirable behavior and admirable traits.

out-groups:

  • They are considered as "they" and perceived as negatively.
  • They are dangerous, damaging, dirty and bad.
