There are many similarities between Jainism and Buddhism. Both religions were born out of pessimistic spirit of the time and as a revolt against orthodox Brahmanical Hindusim.

Both believed that world is a misery and man is subjected to results of karma.

Both taught that non-violence is the means of salvation.

Jainism preaches the practice of extreme non-violence, self-mortification and rigorous penance unlike Buddhism.

Jainism did not reject caste system entirely and were more accommodating to Hindus but Buddhism rejected caste system and severed the contacts with Hinduism.
