Both aurangazeb and akbar are considered to be the greatest of the mughal rulers but they differ in their religiious views depending on the political conditiions of their times. Akbar's religious policy can be inferred from  his relations with rajputs/ Indian rulers and the secular atmosphere he had created during his reign by abolishing jizya and poll tax which demarcated hindus and muslims on the basis of religion. Whereas Aurangazeb was differentially cold towards rajputs to rally around Muslim nobles and ulema. Aurangazeb's reign also saw the demolition of many hindu temples.

78Aadil7861: Akbar abolished Pilgrimage in 1563 and Jaziya in 1564 to ge the support of Indians especially Rajputs."Because they were most powerful in india.By abolishing Jaziya and Pilgrimage Rajputs supported Akbar For the Extension of Mughal Empire. On the other hand,Aurangzeb Reimposed Jaziya and Pilgrimage on non muslims in 1679 and he also ordered his nobles to demolish temples like Somnath temple etc. Because of these policies of Aurangzeb all Indians hated him and did not support him.
