After the Kalinga war, Ashoka invaded after a fierce of battle Kalinga was conquered.
In fact, there were blood and tears everywhere and includes magnificence of the world turned into the flaming pits of hell.
This should undergo significant changes in state policy and act towards attitude of Ashoka wanted to defeat enemies.

Ashoka was one the powerful kings at that period. He was continously expanding his kingdom. Once his eyes fell on the Kalinga Kingdom ( present Odissa ) he fought the war and gained victory. Many people were killed in this war.
Ashoka saw the people crying for their dearer ones and he also saw the blood was flowing like a river. His heart turned into mercy. From then onwards he chose to be a Buddhist monk and elected dharma.
Upto his death he tried to spread dharma through his inscriptions and his followers. Hence, Kalinga war was one of the greatest wars which changed a powerful kings like Ashoka.
