Chlorine atoms are very unstable and do not appear in nature. Chlorine is usually found as two chlorine atoms bonded together. Chlorine in this form is a gas and is very toxic.

Chlorine ions are always accompanied with a counter ion like sodium such as NaCl which is common table salt. In this form, chlorine is not usually toxic.
