Explanation:

Laser, Inkjet, Dot Matrix, and Plotter | Thermal ... Laser printers rely on the use of fine ink powder and heat to create images. Inkjet printers typically spray liquid ink on paper through microscopic nozzles. And dot matrix printers have pins that push an ink-soaked ribbon against the paper, which creates images or prints.

Let us see about these printers in detail in the following points :

1. Invented -

  • Laser printer was invented in 969 by Gary Starkweather.
  • Inkjet printer was developed in the early 1950s.
  • Dot matrix printer was introduced by Digital Equipment Corporation in 1970.

2. Way of working -

  • Laser printers use fine ink powder and heat the powder on the paper.
  • Inkjet printers spray liquid ink on paper through microscopic nozzles.
  • Dot Matrix works having pins pushed against an ink soaked ribbon to paper.

3. Types -

  • Types of laser printer : Personal and Office printers, Black and White or color printers.
  • Types of inkejet printer : Continuous (CIJ) and drop-on demand (DOD).
  • Types of dot matrix : Serial Dot Matrix printers and Line Dot Matrix.

4. Price per page -

  • Laser printer : USD 0.6 for black and white page. Much higher for a color page.
  • Inkjet printers : USD 0.20 color page; USD 0.4-0.5 black and white page.
  • Dot matrix : Copies are quite cheap.

5. Printing speed -

  • Laser printer : 20 pages a minute
  • Inkjet printers : 6 pages a minute
  • Dot matrix : 30-550 characters per second.

6. Advantages -

  • Laser printer : Prints faster, bigger input trays.
  • Inkjet printer : Quieter in operation, high print quality, no warm up time, low cost per page
  • Dot matrix : Cheaper to print as ribbon is cheap.

7. Disadvantages -

  • Laser printer : More susceptible to paper jams. Toner is very expensive, print quality for color is adequate, device itself is expensive, has health hazards if not properly maintained.
  • Inkjet printer : Ink is expensive, issues with ‘intelligent’ ink cartridges, lifetime of inkjet prints produced by aqueous inks is shorter, ink is not waterproof, and nozzle is prone to clogging.
  • Dot matrix : Initial purchase is expensive, maintenance is expensive, prints is not fast, makes noise.

8. Maintenance -

  • Laser printer : Expensive
  • Inkjet matrix : Cheaper
  • Dot matrix : Expensive, parts are hard to come by.
