An electric-drive-based direct pump control instead of a valve control in an electrohydraulic fork lift is studied. The paper focuses on analyzing the system behavior in cases of two different hydraulic pumps. Their effects on the energy recovery options in an electro-hydraulic forklift are investigated. The pump flow is directly controlled by the speed control of a permanent magnet machine drive. The findings of this paper can lead to efficiency improvements in the design of lifting equipment. The most energy efficient hydraulic pump drive is searched and the effect of the electric component efficiencies on the system efficiency is studied. The drive consists of a Direct Torque Control (DTC) controlled electric servo motor running a reversible hydraulic pump that directly controls the lifting motion of the fork without traditional control valves. Two basic types of hydraulic pumps were evaluated and tested. An experimental setup was built and tested from the energy recovery point of view. The results of the system were analyzed and compared. Based on the results, energy can be recovered efficiently using the technology proposed.
