The outer core is hot enough to melt both of these metals, so the outer core is liquid. The inner core is even hotter, but it's under so much pressure from the weight of the whole earth above it that it doesn't melt. The iron and nickel in the inner core is way past it's melting temperature, buts it's all solid.
