Causes of the French Revolution:
a. The French social structure- This would primarily explains the organisation of the French society which was based on hierarchy supporting the nobility and clergy. TheKing, the nobility and the clergy lived a lavish life style.
b. The Role of the Church in the French society- The clergy who constituted the first estate were exempted from paying taxes to the state.The clergy further extracted taxes, called tithes from the peasantry.
c. Economic crisis-The French societywas characterised by grave social and economic disparities. The third estate which primarily comprised of the peasants, who were mainly engaged in subsistence farming, ownedno landand were deprived of political rights.Peasants were burdened with heavy taxes, tithes, feudal dues, offered services to the Lords.. Bad harvest, crop failure brought them on the brink of starvation.The prices of essential commodities were very high due to increased demand and wages were low. This made survival difficult for thepoor sections of the society.
d. Rise of Middle class- The growth of middle class and the ideas of philosophers like Rousseau and Voltaire on equality and freedom madethe people aware of their rights and question the authority of the king and church. They indeed demanded government based on consent and society based on merit.

a.In India the feeling of nationalism is associated with anti colonial movement . In the process of their struggle against the colonial yoke people began to discover their own identity of belonging to one nation.
b. Excessive economic exploitation by the British and reducing country to abject poverty, oppressive British policies did bring the people of the country together to fight against the colonial yoke.
c. Political occupation of the country, British policy of racial discrimination, of divide and rule , instilled a feeling of nationalism among the people, which encouraged them to fight against the foreign domination.
d. Acts like Rowlatt act, salt tax, jallianwala bagh tragedy, compelled people to fight against the colonial regime, to organize mass movements.
e. Umbrella Organization like Congresswhich led the nationalist struggle brought every section of Indian society under its fold.
f. Nationalist Movement as led by Mahatma Gandhi who brought the people of country together into organized movements of mass struggle.
g. Political administrative changes introduced by the British like Judicial system, army , police gave country a single political structure and unified administration.
