The Canterville ghost can be called an amiable ghost who though a ghost had the qualities of a man who was remorseful for his past mistakes. It was not owing to the intrepidity of the Otis family that the ghost became the target of their jokes, it was also owing to his desire not to hurt them. Though he tried to take revenge of the disrespect shown to him by the family, he didn't any real animosity towards them. His sensitivity is quite reflected in his attitude towards Virginia, whom he looks at hope for his deliverance. On the contrary any other ghost would never have been as gentle as he was. For instance Helen in Shady Plot though presented as a helpful ghost, yet she became so vindictive to the author when he could not do what she wanted him to do for her.
