The Prime Minister of India is appointed by the President. But it is expected of the President to appoint only that person as Prime Minister who is leader of the majority party in the Lok Sabha. This is necessary because the Constitution holds the Prime Minister and his team of ministers responsible to the Lok Sabha.This is the function of both.
