For rice, a lot of water is required for its growth. So it is advisable to sow the seeds at the time of rainy season. Thats the reason why it is called "kharif" crops.

For wheat, a strong cold temperature is required for its growth. Hence, it must be grown at the time of winters. It does not require heat at all otherwise it will rot. And thats why it is known as "rabi" crops.

Hope it helped :)
