In terms of

religion, the Red Indians were almost animists, believing in the spirits of the

dead and respect for their elders and ancestors who they used to pray to.

However, not

all red Indian tribes had the same religion. Due to the vast size of North

America, every tribe had developed their own distinct religion which reflected

their history and past. (Even today, there are 500 distinct tribes still in the

US) To date, many native Americans proudly practice their ancient religion and

culture in their own homes and areas.

However, the Native Population has practised

in stark contrast to the White men who came over from Europe in the Middle

Ages. A world dominated by the Christian Religion. White man believed Christian

concept of Trinity, Jesus, his mother and the Holy Spirit. They prayed to them

and had a strict belief in the Bible聽

This is

probably the reason by the Native population were quickly labelled as infidels.

This ‘label’ was used as an excuse by the early spanish and later English

settlers to kill and take over the property and lands of the native people.

All the

wrong the Europeans did in the early years, they found a good excuse by telling

how these people were ‘savages’ and needed to be handled like animals.
