Education philosophy of J.J. Rousseau

His educational philosophy was based on Naturalism. According to Rousseau the meaning of education is not merely storing knowledge or imparting information. It is not accretion from outside. It is the development of the child's natural abilities and powers from within.

He gave top priority to education from Nature. It comprises the spontaneous development of a child's natural tendencies and interests.

He was not in favour of education from Man in the initial stages. It involves influencing a child's social contacts and groups.

Education from Things consists of acquisition of information and knowledge through contact with physical surroundings and a child's experience of dealing with things.

According to him education should be regarded as, "the process of development into an enjoyable, rational harmoniously balanced useful and hence natural life".

Education philosophy of M.K. Gandhi

According to him, education is an all-round drawing out of the best in child and man - body and spirit. Education is a means to achieve the complete blossoming of personality. At the same time it is an instrument of service to the nation.

Education is more than literacy its ultimate aim is self-realization.

He gave importance to vocational education and said that education should be self-supporting.

In order to achieve cultural refinement through educations he emphasized the need to study the Gita and sacred books of all religions. He laid emphasis on character education. Education should help to develop the values of ahimsa or non-violence, and qualities of self-restraint, purity in personal life, courage, service of humanity, strength of conviction, sense of responsibility and righteousness.
