Alkali metals have one valency as they have the tendency to lose one electron from its outermost shell and they react with water to form their hydroxides which are strong alkalies .....and Alkaline Earth Metals have two valency as they have the tendency to lose two electrons from its outermost shell and their oxides occur in the earth's crust and their hydroxides are alkalies.. Hope this is helpful.
