The Editor,

The Times of India,

Mumbai.

Subject: The increasing noise pollution.

Sir,

With due respect I would like to highlight the increasing noise pollution in our cities and towns.

Noise pollution is caused by man and I believe it is within our capacity to reduce it by changing our ways over a few things.

First, the celebration of festivals is now synonymous with blaring loudspeakers. We are social beings and festivals are good for us. It is the manner in which festivals are celebrated that is wrong. The use of loudspeakers (PA Systems) must be banned.

Second, there are restaurants, cafes and night clubs where loud music is played late into the night in the name of birthday celebrations and parties. We need to put this under control.

Third, loud music are played all through the day and late into the whole night in the name of birthday parties, get-togethers, etc. The owners should simply prohibit this trend.

Fifth, noise is also caused by manufacturing industries. They should be shifted far away from populated areas.

Sixth, the major noise pollution and air pollution come from motor vehicles. Old vehicles must be phased out. Awareness on maintenance to reduce pollution is necessary. Stricter laws on noise and air pollution by vehicles must be introduced.

Noise pollution is public disturbance. Noise pollution disturbs the sick people who needed quietness to rest and sleep. Noises interfere with the study times of students. It is difficult to concentrate on studies with so much annoying noises. Noise pollution is a health hazard. It causes headache, irritable behavior, etc.

The government, the government departments and agencies, and the general public must join hands to defeat noise pollution.

Yours sincerely,

B Ramesh Dhar
