Reaction of nitrobenzene with H₂/Pd + ethanol

Explanation:

  • Reaction of nitrobenzene in presence of H₂ and palladium with ethanol is known as Aldol Condensation Reaction.
  • When nitrobenzene reacts with the hydrogen, palladium followed by reaction of ethanol and gives N-ethyl aniline as a product.
  • Firstly, nitrobenzene in presence of hydrogen and palladium gets convert into aniline then further aniline reacts with ethanol and converts into N-ethyl aniline as a final product.
  • The reaction involved is -

⇒  Nitrobenzene(C₆H₅NO₂)  + H₂ →  C₆H₅NO + H₂  →  C₆H₅-NH-OH  + H₂

                                                                                                       ↓

                                                                                                 C₆H₅NH₂

⇒   Aniline(C₆H₅NH₂) + [CH₃-CH₂-OH ⇔ CH₃-CH=O] → C₆H₅-N=CH-CH₃

                                                                                                   + H₂

                                                                                                       ↓

                                                                   N-ethyl aniline(C₆H₅-NH-CH₂CH₃)
