By completing the sentences in the poem:

The poet did not meet the members of the family in the house. He assumes the following based on the evidence that he sees in the house.

1. He thinks the man is not a farmer seeing boulders and leaky barn.

2. He thinks that the man of the house must be tall seeing the large shoes and bed.

3. Toys were scattered in the yard, and the poet thinks that it belongs to the child of the house.

4. On seeing oilcloth on shelves and wallpaper, he thinks that a woman lived in that farmhouse.

5. On seeing the condition of the farmhouse, the poet thinks that the family must have been poor and so they had to leave the house for not repaying the debts. Else, they could have won a fortune and might have moved to the city.

Answer with Explanation:

(1) In the first stanza, the poet refers to four pieces of evidence: large shoes, a long bed, the Bible, fields cluttered with boulders and a leaky barn.

This leads the poet to conclude that 'the man of the house' was big , tall, religious and not interested in farming.

(2)  I think that the child was probably about six years old because he played with the sandbox made from a tractor tyre,a rubber cow,  a broken plow and a doll.

(3) The poet suggests that a woman lived in the farmhouse because the bedroom wall was pampered with lilacs and the kitchen shelves were covered with oilcloth.

(4) The family probably left the farmhouse because of some natural calamity or the enemy soldiers.
