The rain came down in thick, unyielding sheets that seemed to swipe across the fields like a scythe. The sound of the raindrops on the tin roof rumbled as if there was an artillery barrage, each drop it’s own thunder as it fell. As she looked out, the princess could see the men throwing sandbags as fast as they could. They had managed to stay ahead of the rising waters, but only by a hair. And the rain is lightening up, she thought. They had told her of the weather here in the North, but she had never quite believed it.
