The name of the compounds and their reactions are as follows:

  • The name of compound A is Sodium Chloride(NaCl) which is commonly called Table salt or Common Salt which is commonly used in cooking food.
  • When compound A is treated with water and electricity Sodium Hydroxide(NaOH) is formed. It is compound B. The chemical reaction for the formation of Sodium Hydroxide is given below:

                    2NaCl + 2H₂O -------> 2NaOH + H₂ + Cl₂

  • In addition to giving out hydroxide, Chlorine and Hydrogen gases are also liberated.
  • This process is called as Chlor-alkali process. When electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride which is  called brine, it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide, chlorine gas, and hydrogen gas.
  • The process is named Chlor-alkali because the term Chlor-alkali is a combination of two chemicals i.e. chlorine and alkali which are produced simultaneously because of the electrolysis of saltwater.
