Sustainability has traditionally been defined as how the natural environment can remain rich and diverse in plant and animal species whilst also being productive. A good example is managing a forest to simultaneously:

provide commercial productsmaintain ecological functionssupport plant and animal diversity.

The 21st-century definition of sustainability goes far beyond this. It includes economic and social measures, such as health and wellbeing or reducing poverty. This updated definition refers to the need to develop the sustainable models necessary for both humans and the planet to survive.

Conservation and sustainability 

A wide range of organisations promote conservation and sustainability issues. They may be small, local groups or larger, national organisations like ours. The focus of each one can be a specific habitat or species group, or a locality, region or area of the country.
