Percy went down to the underworld because he thinks Hades has the lightning bolt.  Percy gets into Hades and finds out that Hades didn't steal it.  He also finds that Hades helm of darkness got stolen too.  Hades still thinks that Percy stole his helm, so he is checking his backpack and finds the lightning bolt.  That wasn't Percy's backpack though.  It was Ares.  Percy pulls out the pearls and Hades lets Percy's mom go.  Percy had three pearls, but four people.  he had to choose who stays in the underworld.  Grover offers first, then Annabeth offers.  Percy refuses for them to stay, so he picks his mother.  He and she knows it is best for the three to go to Olympus and tell them about Ares.  Once Percy is out of the underworld, Ares was waiting for him.


Percy made a deal with Ares.  If Percy won, Ares would give Percy the helm, but if Percy lost, he would die.  During their fight, cop cars started surrounding them.  Eventually Percy won and Ares gave him the helm.  Now Percy had to get to the Empire State building in New York.  He had to fly from Los Angeles.  They took a plane, hoping that Zues, god of the sky, wouldn't blow the plane up.  Fortunately, he didn't and they returned it to Olympus.  When Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood, he has a talk with Luke.  Luke believes that Kronos, god of the titans, will take over Olympus.  Percy has a choice to stay at Camp Half-Blood or stay with him mom and go to school.  He keeps thinking and eventually chooses to stay with his mom and return to Camp Half-Blood next summer.
