The Vedic age c. 1500 – c. 500 BCE is the time in the history of the Indian subcontinent between the end of the Indus valley civilization, and second urbanization. This was the time period in which the Rig Veda was compiled. During this time a rigid caste system was prevalent in society, for instance, in the social hierarchy the priests were on the top and the shudras were on the bottom. The shudra or the fourth Varna people were not allowed to perform the Vedic rituals and they were banned to chant the Vedic mantras. A new type of coinage was introduced during this time called the Punched marked coins, though the wealth of a person was measured in the form of cattle.
