- The Constitution declares the Union of India to be an independent sovereign, socialist, secular people's republic; Justice, equality, and liberty are guaranteed to the citizens of this country, and citizens are encouraged to inculcate fraternity among themselves to safeguard national and provincial unity.
- "Socialist", "secular", "solidarity" and "fraternity" among all citizens – these terms were added to the constitution in 1976 through a constitutional amendment. Indians celebrate 26th January every year as Republic Day to commemorate the promulgation of the Constitution. The Constitution of India is the largest written and immutable constitution of any independent sovereign state in the world.
