I know why the caged bird sings is a beautiful poem written by Maya Angelou.
She has highlighted the racial discrimination that the black people faced. She compares the black with a bird in a cage whose wings are cut and feet are tied, and it cannot fly so it opens its throat to sing. The palefaces(white people) are compared to a free bird who can fly wherever it wants. Further in the poem, the caged bird is said to have a longing of freedom which symbolises the insult and humiliation that the blacks faced and that they want to live freely just like the whites.
