Tukaram, Ramanand, Namdev, Jnaneshwar, Chaitanya, Eknath, Surdas, Tulsidas and Mirabai were some Bhakti saints. Guru Nanak and Sant Kabir preached the unity of God and asked the people to follow a guru.

The Sufis lived a simple life. They lived in khanqahs. They were organized into silsilahs. The most popular silsilahs were the Chishti and the Suhrawardi silsilahs. Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti, Baba Farid, Khwaja Qutb-ud-din Bakhtiyar Kaki, Khwaja Hazrat Nizam-ud-din Auliya and Sheikh Nasir-ud-din Mahmud Chirag-i-Dilli were some famous Chishti saints.
