.

Of course without doubt, he is as clever as made out in the books. This is because if the details are given by the others, we tend to think that their opinions may be their personal opinions and may not reflect the general public opinion or real picture.

This can be gauged from his literary works written by him during his own life time. He wrote Pamduranga Maahaathmyam & Paarijaathaapa haranam. Both of them are epoch making kaavyaas.

He earned as much name and fame as Birbal earned with Akbar.

He was in the courtyard of the Vijayanagar King Sree Krishna Devaraya .

He was a witty poet with a great presence of mind. When the king was making mistakes, the people including the employees in the courtyard were not having the guts to question the decisions of the king. Under such special circumstances, people would approach Tenali Raman for redressal of their grievance. Tenali Raman used to solve their problems with his wit and humour. Hari om.

To cite Tenali Raman’s intelligence an example is illustrated below :

BARBER BEING CONVERTED TO BRAHMIN:

Once the King Krishna Devaraya called for the Barbar. By the time the Barbar came, the king dozed off in his chair. However, the Barbar seemed to had cut the hair of the king without disturbing him.

When king woke- up he found his hair trimmed neatly to the king's liking. The was very much pleased with the skills of the Barbar and sent a word for him. When the Barbar came, the king expressed his happiness and asked the Barbar to ask for a boon which the king was prepared to honour in view of the excellent skills displayed by the Barbar.

The Barbar wanted to take advantage of the situation and said to the king :

“ Maha Prabho (O great king)! People look down upon me as I am born in a lower menial Caste. I am really fed-up with this menial treatment. I wish to be converted into a pious Brahmin . Kindly do the needful my Great king.

Immediately the king summoned the Purohit from the Royal families so that the barber is converted to a Brahmin.

The barber felt very happy, but the whole Brahmin community was terribly upset over the decision of the king. The Brahmin community pleaded with the Raj purohit to avoid this barbarous act to uphold the dignify of the Brahmin community. The raj purohit expressed his inability to stop this act as it was personally ordered by the king himself.

Left with no other alternative, the Brahmin community complained the matter to the Tenali Raman for redressal of their grievances.

Tenali Raman promised his Brahmin community to do the needful to stop this barbarous act.

Next day, the Raj purohit communicated the ceremony details to the barber and asked him to get ready for the conversion ceremony to be conducted by the Raj purohit near the sacred river.

King Krishna Devaraya used to go to the river side for walking. At that time Tenali Raman was trying to throw a black dog tied with a belt into the river , uttering some mantras and pushing the dog into the river repeatedly and chanting the mantras.

The King Krishna devaraya who was watching the episode came near Tenali Raman and asked as to what Tenali Raman was doing. Tenali Raman replied to the King : “ Maha prabho ! I am converting this dog into a sacred cow.”

King Krishna devaraya laughed and said : “How can that be possible?”. Tenali Raman replied : “Maha prabho! When a barber could be converted into a Brahmin, why not a dog be converted into a cow?”.

The King Krishna devaraya realised his mistake and asked the purohit not to go ahead with the ritual of converting the barber into a Brahmin. Thus Tenali Raman made the King Krishna devaraya realised his mistake which others did not dare to do it.
