Substances allow heat to pass through them at different rates. Substances that allow heat to move quickly through them are called conductors. Metals are conductors. We use metal pans for cooking and metal radiators in heating systems. The metal ensures that heat flows quickly.


Substances that don’t allow heat to easily move through them are called insulators. Gases and plastics are insulators. We use insulators to protect ourselves from heat or to prevent heat flow. Building materials use insulation to delay the flow of heat into or out of a building to keep us comfortable and to keep our heating costs low.
