CONSERVATION OF FLORA AND FAUNA

The government of India and the state governments have taken several steps to save the flora and fauna of the country. Some of them are as under:

1. Fourteen biosphere reserves have been set up in different parts of India. Biosphere reserves are multi-purpose protected areas for flora and fauna. Four out of the fourteen biosphere reserves in India have been included in the world network of biosphere reserves.

These are:

(a) The Sundarbans in West Bengal

(b) Nanda Devi in Uttarakhand

(c) Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu

(d) The Nilgiris in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu

List of Biosphere Reserves

1. Sundarbans

2. Gulf of Mannar

3. The Nilgiris

4. Nanda Devi

5. Nokrek

6. Great Nicobar

7. Manas

8. Simlipal

9. Dihang-Diban

10. Dibru-Saikhowa

11. Agasthyamalai

12. Kanchenjunga

13. Pachmari

14. Achanakmar Amarkantak

2. The government has also set up about 490 wildlife sanctuaries and zoological parks and 89 national parks.

3. The new eco-development projects started by the governments include Project Tiger, Project Rhinoceros, Project Elephant, Project Great Indian Bustard, etc.

4. There is a complete ban on hunting of wildlife and the poachers are not allowed to enter the forests.

5. Captive breeding of wildlife has been encouraged.

6. Technical experts are now available to many botanical gardens since 1992.

7. Financial help is also made available to governmental and non-governmental organisations to protect the flora and fauna in India.

8. Seminars, workshops and exhibitions are arranged for the benefit of wildlife and also for general awareness among the people.

Thus, every Indian must understand and realise the significance of the natural ecosystem for our survival and growth. We can do it by taking immediate action against the indiscriminate destruction of our natural habitat.
