Consider a regular cube with positive point charge +Q in all corners except for one which has a negaive point charge -Q. Let the distance from any corner to the center of the cube be r. What is the magnitude of electric field at point P, the center of the cube?
Answers
electric field at point P is 2kQ/r .
this question can be understand easily when we draw a rough diagram as shown in figure.
here 7 points have same charge +Q and one point has charge - Q.
here electric field due to point A and G are same but just opposite in direction.
so, electric field at point P due to A is cancelled by electric field due to G.
similarly, electric field due to E is cancelled by electric field due to B.
and electric field due to F is cancelled by electric field due to C.
but electric field due to H cannot be cancelled by electric field due to D because both have different charges.
so, electric field at Point P = electric field due to H + electric field due to D
= kQ/r + kQ/r
= 2kQ/r [ along P to H ]
