Given,

Voltmeter on left = 10V

Voltmeter on right = 8V

To find,

a) The current through the resistance R

b) the value of R

c) the potential difference across the battery.

Solution,

We start with the 3rd part as finding the potential difference will give us other values we need

c. Total resistance = Ri + 4

On Using Ohms law

V = IR

= I (Ri + 4)

= IRi+ I4

= 10 + 8

V = 18V = Potential difference across the battery

b. As of now,

IR = 10V

and I (4) = 8V

So,

(IR)/(I 4) = 10/8

R/4 = 10/8

R = 10 x 4/8

R = 5Ω

a. IR = 10V

and R = 5Ω

So

I = 10/5

= 2A

Thus,

The potential difference is 18V

Resistance is 5Ω

Current is 2A
