Consider the solubility of the sparingly soluble salt copper (1) phthalate, CuzPl in aqueous
solution buffered to pH 7.00. The fully protonated form of P12- = phthalate is phthalic acid
(C6H4(COOH)2). Information: Ksp for Cu2Pl(s) = 6.4 x 10-14, Kai = 1.12 x 10-, K2 = 3.9 x
10. Please notice that these K, 's are for phthalic acid, not phthalate. Ignore K, for Cu(I).
a. (8 pts) Write out all relevant reactions and their equilibrium expressions for solving a
systematic treatment of equilibrium problem for this solution.
b. (2pts) Write a mass balance equation.
c. (6 pts) Calculate the molar solubility of copper (1) phthalate, Cu2Pls) at pH = 7.00;
(Remember that molar solubility is the number of moles of a substance that can be
dissolved in 1 L of solution.)
d. (6 pts) Based on your work in part c, calculate the concentration of [H2Pl] at pH 7.00
and briefly explain why the concentration is so small. Be specific with the chemistry!
