The Constitution of India was formed by the Constituent Assembly which did not reflect the ideas of only its members but also expressed the views of the people. Members from all the different regions of the country, belonging to various language groups, classes, castes, occupations and religions were represented in the Assembly.
The work of framing the Constitution was done in a very open and systematic manner. First the basic principles were decided. Then a Drafting Committee which worked under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar prepared a draft Constitution. This draft was taken up for discussion and each clause was discussed in detail.
Over 2000 amendments were considered. The discussions took place for 114 days spread over a period of three years. All the 'Constituent Assembly Debates' were carefully recorded and have been preserved. They are in the form of 12 bulky volumes. These give the rationale which is behind each and every provision adopted by the Constitution. Till today no political party or social group has questioned the Constitution's legitimacy.
So the Constitution of India is a multipurpose document which caters to our needs, requirements and aspirations.
