construct a word problem on simultaneous linear equations in two variables (on age, rupees, metres, speed), so that the value of one variable will be 18.​

The word problem is :- The sum of two numbers is 38 and the difference between them is 2. Find the numbers.

 

 

Solution :

• Let the numbers be x and y.

• The sum of two numbers is 38.

• i.e.,  x + y = 38  ...(i)

• The difference between them is 2.

• i.e., x - y = 2 ...(ii)

• Adding (i) and (ii) we get 2x = 36  ⇒ x = 18

• and, 18 + y = 38  ⇒ y = 20
