Solution :
- Let the numbers be x and y.
- The sum of two numbers is 38.
- i.e., x + y = 38 ...(i)
- The difference between them is 2.
- i.e., x - y = 2 ...(ii)
- Adding (i) and (ii) we get 2x = 36 ⇒ x = 18
- and, 18 + y = 38 ⇒ y = 20
