Answer:
Food chain which occurs in an aquatic ecosystem is known as aquatic food chain.
Explanation:
- Food chain is a sequential and linear presentation of flow of nutrients and energy from organism of basic trophic level i.e. producer till the last trophic level of tertiary consumer.
- A food chain follows a specific path unlike food web in which, there is a series of chain of organisms and it does not follow a single pathway but, there are multiple pathways.
- Food chain which occurs in an aquatic ecosystem is known as aquatic food chain.
- There are four trophic levels in an aquatic food chain –
- Producers – first trophic level. Ex – plankton, phytoplankton.
- Primary consumers – second trophic level. Ex – zooplankton.
- Secondary consumers – third trophic level. Ex – small fishes.
- Tertiary consumers – fourth trophic level. Ex – shark.
- After every level, heat loss occurs and a small amount of energy is also lost while moving from one trophic level to another.
- That is why, producers have the maximum energy whereas, tertiary consumers have the lest energy in any food chain.
This is a flow chart presentation of an aquatic food chain.
