While time and distance have not eroded the bonds of friendship between two men, their vocations in life, ironically, have acted as the instrument to sever this relationship. Having promised each other to meet twenty years later at 10:00 p.m. in front of Big Joe Brady's restaurant where they used to dine together as young men, the two friends planned a reunion after each has his "destiny worked out." On the night of their planned reunion, Jimmy, who has become a "beat cop," a police officer who walks a section of the city and patrols it, is on duty checking the fronts of stores to be sure they are secure. When he arrives at the spot where Big Joe Brady's formerly was, there is his old friend waiting for him. However, when "Silky" Bob strikes a match, Jimmy recognizes his old friend as a wanted man. Stunned, Jimmy knows that duty supersedes his old friendship; however, he does not have the heart to arrest Bob for whom he still has deep feelings. So, he pretends that he is not Bob's friend, tells the man that he hopes his friend shows up, and goes to the police station.

It is at this point that a dialogue between the plainclothes policeman and Jimmy can be made. And it would seem logical that he would select one of these plainclothes men with whom he has a relationship, either personal or professional. Here is a start for this dialogue:

Jimmy enters looking distraught. The plainclothes officer asks him:

"What 'ja doing in here, Jimmy? You're not due to get off for a couple of hours....Hey, what's matter with ya, anyway? You look like ya seen a ghost or som'thin'."
